It was just another glorious day. My favorite temperature, 50 degrees and overcast. You see I’m a dog. Not just any dog. I’m Iceman, a pedigreed Labrador Retriever. My brother, Goose, and I are out for our daily walk.
Today I felt frisky, so instead of walking, we took our people mom for a run. Ears flapping as we strode, wind in our fur, I enjoyed the quick pace. Then our people mom… well she kinda started dragging. Hard to believe she used to be a marathoner. Anyway, we had to slow down to a trot.
Sniffing the air, I could smell all the neighbor dogs that had walked before me that day. I was most looking forward to seeing Spud or Stella. Just as that thought entered my head, I sniffed the air, and yes, it was Stella’s scent.
A block ahead was my girl. A rescue, she looks like an oversized beagle. Those charming floppy ears and the mottled colors of a true beauty, gold, brown, white and black. We charged ahead much to the consternation of our people mom. I wanted to get there before Goose and do the sniff dance.
Goose, by way of introduction is my true brother. Same mom and dad, just two years ahead of me. He is “Mr. Perfect”. Always obedient. Charming and polite, he is adored by dogs and man. Me, well I’m kinda naughty. A bit of a goof. The Marmaduke of the family. My urges and instincts get me in trouble. Like right now, I raced to see Stella and the leashes got all tangled up.
People mom started to bark and my brother was flipped upside down half strangled by the leash that had wrapped around his neck. People mom tried to untangle him and ended up flipped upside down as well. It was on grass at least and she took it in stride, but what a sight. Dogs and people on the ground and leashes in complex knots that a sailor would be proud of.
It was a fun run/walk and I can’t wait for tomorrow’s adventure. I hope I get to see Stella again!
