Final Days in Arenal

Fun on the Farm

As we continued our journey through Costa Rica, we decided to spend our final days hiking the local trails around our cabin. These trails were as rich with wildlife as the national preserves. We spotted a butterfly nest, olingos, coatis, a few birds and toured the local farm and sugar cane grinding mill.

Rainforest Comes Alive at Night

Taratulas Come Out at Night

Pre-scheduled the day before, was an evening night walk through the rainforest of Santa Elena in Monteverde. Our guide, Greybin led us with flashlights through the forest that was very much alive with animals.

Sloth at Night

A grey sloth with baby was in the tree overhead. We spotted an armadillo foraging for insects across the path. A viper was waiting for it’s prey, fortunately we were not the prey! Olingos, lizards and tarantulas wandered about. It was cool at night in the forest.

Lake Arenal & Arenal Volcano

Drought Conditions at Lake Arenal

The next day, our boat taxi was a bit of a walk, as Lake Arenal was very low from lack of rain. It was a clear day and we were blessed with a remarkable view of Arenal Volcano.

Arenal Volcano

Costa Rica has gone to using 95% renewable energy. It is mostly hydro, which makes sense in a rainforest environment. But thermal and wind provide energy resources too.
